Statement

My painting came to me after a series of experiences — some of which were transcendental, some more mundane. Either way it’s difficult to write about the work.

In some ways it’s a map of time, and carries within it all the hopes and desires in my life.

It’s just another form of prayer.

The style of work is something like doing kantha, the needle work of Bengal, except it’s done here not on old sarees but on paper and with paint.

Some thirty years ago my grandmother—who was visiting from Shantiniketan in Bengal—saw me doing this kind of work and said “Oh this is much faster than with needle and thread”.

It’s simple, repetitive strokes give me peace and strength.

I share this work here in the hope that it will bring others some happiness and joy too.
